How to Encourage Your Child to Start Reading?

Updated: Dec 15, 2024

I am a teacher with 25+ years of experience, and I have seen many parents struggle with the same concern—"My child doesn’t like to read!" Reading books is one of the most important skills we can teach our children. It opens up a world of imagination, knowledge, and critical thinking. However, when a child seems uninterested, it can feel like an uphill battle. I’ve been there too—trying every trick in the book (pun intended!) to get my little one to pick up a book instead of reaching for the TV remote. Over time, I learned that building a reading habit isn’t about forcing them—it’s about sparking their curiosity and making reading fun.

Here are some tips that worked for me and might help you too:

1. Start with Their Interests

Think about what your child loves. Is it dinosaurs, superheroes, or fairy tales? Pick books related to their favourite topics. I’ve seen reluctant readers transform into avid book lovers just because they found a book about their favourite animal or hobby.

2. Create a Cozy Reading Space

Make reading special by creating a little “book nook” at home. Add a comfy chair, some cushions, and a shelf with colourful books at their level. I’ve helped many families set up reading nooks, and it’s always heartwarming to see children gravitate toward their little haven with excitement.

3. Read Together Every Day

Start small—just 10–15 minutes a day. Reading aloud not only improves their vocabulary but also creates a beautiful bonding time. Some of the most cherished memories come from sharing laughter over a funny story or feeling the suspense of an adventure together.

4. Let Them Choose

Give your child the freedom to pick their books. We often visit the local library, and I let my kids roam around, exploring. When they feel like they’re in charge, they’re more excited to dive in.

5. Be a Role Model

Children mimic what they see. If you want them to read, show them that you love reading too. Carry a book with you, talk about what you’re reading, and make reading a visible part of family life. Soon, they’ll want to join in.

6. Use Technology Wisely

E-books and audiobooks can be a great starting point for reluctant readers. Kids love listening to audiobooks on long car rides. Technology can bridge the gap and eventually lead them to physical books.

7. Celebrate Progress

Make a big deal out of milestones—finishing a book, reading a chapter, or even flipping through picture books. We created a “Reading Star” chart, and every time my daughter completed a book, she got to stick a shiny star. The sense of achievement kept her going!

8. Be Patient and Encouraging

Building a reading habit takes time. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but gentle encouragement and celebrating small victories made all the difference.

Every child is different, and what works for one might not work for another. The key is to stay positive and keep exploring until you find what clicks.

For me, watching my kids lose themselves in a story has been one of the most rewarding experiences as a parent.

If you’ve had success in encouraging your child to read, I’d love to hear your tips! Let’s create a community of book lovers—one child at a time.

Happy Reading! :)
